Reorganisation and redundancy

If your employer is going through a period of organisational change, you may have lots of questions about what this might mean for you. Our advice can help.

Reorganisation or restructuring

A reorganisation or restructuring may affect things like your shift pattern, work location, job role, grade, pay, or other terms and conditions.

If your contract is being changed as part of a reorganisation, see our guidance on contracts, and if you work in the NHS, our guide on Agenda for Change. If the only proposed change is to your shifts, please see our guidance on changes to your shifts.

If your organisation or service is transferring to another employer, this is known as ‘TUPE’. Read more about this process in our guidance on Transferring to another employer (TUPE)

Redundancy

In some cases, a reorganisation can result in a reduction in the number of staff, and so you may be facing redundancy. Our Redundancy and reorganisation guide provides lots of useful information about the process, including consultation, suitable alternative employment, severance schemes, voluntary redundancy, and redundancy pay.

If you are invited to a consultation meeting, read our At risk: one-to-one meeting checklist to help you prepare.

It is important that you check your contract for your redundancy entitlements.

Pensions

If you are concerned about the effect that redundancy may have on your pension, or are considering whether to retire, you should contact your pension provider for information in the first instance. We have some general information on pensions, and if you work in the NHS on the NHS pension scheme.

If you think you might qualify, NHS Ill health retirement might also be an option.

Before making any decisions, you should seek independent financial advice, and might benefit from consulting with one of our corporate partners, Quilter Financial Advisers.
